John Carmack

This guy is my hero. He is the inventor of games which are called first person shooters such as Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. This guy pretty much changed computer games for the better and is not only a genius guy but rumor has it he’s very sweet and charming too. He is also known for his luxury living style and has created his own aerospace company with his fortunes. He taught himself most of what he knows and because of this is actually the lead engineer at his company.

I’m a firm believer in self teaching methods so perhaps that’s why I think this guy is so great but to be honest it’s more about what he has done for us. Computer games would never have been as scary and real as they are today without John Carmack invented the first person shooter. This type of game play is one of the most popular because you actually feel like the character is you and you’re fighting all the zombies or whatever. This is one of the reasons that John Carmack is so great among many other reasons such as his personality and his genius techie mind – he’s just friggin’ awesome.

The founders of Google. Enough said. These guys single handedly changed the Internet as we know it. Google is the most used search engine and is the most famous of all internet sites out there. The popularity of this site overtook Yahoo! in a matter of weeks and was simply brilliant techie stuff which was set up by these two geeks. Google is known as God on the internet by many people and Wikipedia is known as the Bible. Many people follow this religion without even knowing it but it is a great thing and Google is the best thing since sliced bread.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page many not be that geeky – they only invented a website which people had done before but I felt they should get a mention because Google is, after all, one of the most well thought out and strategically planned websites I’ve ever seen. It may look simple to the untrained eye but Google is a master machine and is capable of just about anything. Google is god. You will obey – you will without even realizing it! Geeky stuff aside, Google is great and the inventors deserve their fame even though not many people know their names.

Ok, so you know what CAPTCHAs are right? Well if you don’t then you really need to get with the times. CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Testing to tell Computers and Humans Apart. This was the invention to stop robot sign ups and god knows what else and it’s all thanks to Alan Turing who is actually one of the most well known computer programmers of our time. Born in 1912 and died in 1954 Alan Turing remains to this day to be one of the most genius geeks there ever was or is. His great inventions were and are still popular and very useful today.

His many programmes for computers and technology made computers what they are today and because of him we have loads of cool geeky stuff so I think he deserves a high place in all geek lists. Alan Turing wasn’t a super geek he just knew his techie stuff so I can’t really call him a geek… I’d say he’s more of a nerd and a cool computer nerd at that. He was a genius and thanks to him we don’t need to worry about robots taking over the web! Phew – really glad of that.

Luigi from the Mario Brothers

Ok, so Luigi isn’t technically a geek but come on he’s not exactly cool is he? Given the choice between Mario and Luigi during a game I think I know who I would choose. Mario’s cool and calm and sophisticated and then Luigi is sort of nerdy and always behind Mario. Luigi is still cool just in a nerdy way. Mario Brother’s games were and still are an icon of the gaming world. Thanks to Nintendo Mario & Luigi will always be super cool to geeks and nerds. But Luigi I think is the top nerd of the gaming world and is rightly placed in many geek and nerd lists.

Luigi is a super cool guy but he just doesn’t cut it when it comes to choosing between him and Mario. Luigi is a nerd and I’m not saying it’s a bad thing I’m just saying he’s a nerd. We all love him though and always will. Good old Luigi – he wouldn’t be anywhere if it weren’t for his brother though. His brother Mario runs the show and Luigi just sort of hangs around in the background. But I’m sure he has his own fan base as well but he’ll just never be as cool as Mario.

Elvis Costello

So, before he was a super musician he used to be a computer programmer and still has the fashion sense of a nerd. Be that as it may he’s still a wicked guy – I mean who doesn’t love Elvis Costello? But all jokes aside he is a nerd and always was a nerd, he just got lucky and signed a record deal and became super famous from his music. Cheesy and corny music is his best stuff so yet again his geekiness is shining through even in songs and lyrics and cheesy tunes.

He was actually quite a successful computer programmer in his time but I think he should probably stick to the music – which he has so we can all be happy. Elvis Costello is a super cool guy but is still a nerd, a geek and a damn good guitarist. You can’t go wrong with a bit of Elvis Costello playing in the background – I wonder if he’d carried on with his computer programming whether he would have made it quite so far? I’m thinking not. Especially when you consider he’s around the same age as good old Bill Gates so he probably would have had stiff competition.

Steve Jobs

Now, Steve Jobs you may not have heard of but he’s the guy who invented Apple Computers and was one of the guys who made Mac OS. He’s a very geeky guy and is also the brains behind such inventions as the iPhone, iPod and other genius creations which improve our technology world. This great geek actually has a bit of a following and is known for his speeches where he unveils products – the last one he did was where he unveiled the iPhone. These speeches now have a little name which I think is quite catchy. Jobsnotes.

Jobsnotes are what most of the following wait for, many people believe he is their god and that without him their life would fall apart. Of course, this isn’t true, he isn’t god. But then life would be very different without him and his inventions so I though it best to mention him as a very famous geek or nerd. He’s actually somewhat of a legend in my book too and although I’m more of a fan of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs is still an icon for this day and age. But then if he hadn’t invented the Apple Mac, I’m sure someone else would have – it’s all relative.

OK, so not everyone likes Bill Gates but to be honest they’re probably just jealous. It’s been known that Bill Gates is actually a very reasonable guy – when he was building his mansion in Hollywood he paid his neighbors a visit and paid off their mortgages for them because of the inconvenience which was going to be caused by large equipment such as cranes and other house building things going right past their houses. I’d be pretty happy if that happened to me. Also, he’s of course, the founder of the amazing Microsoft and is a multi billionaire.

This guy has got to be one of the most famous geeks in the world. He single handedly changed the world of computers and is now one of the most recognized names in the world. You can’t get geekier or more famous than Bill Gates I don’t think! Everyone knows who he is and he is definitely a geek because he spent the majority of his life with computers and software programs and other geeky things. He’s an icon for some people and to be honest the people who don’t like him are just jealous… have they ever met him? No. So how can they say they hate him?
